I love how this recipe brings together the rich flavors of spinach and cheese with the light, airy texture of puff pastry. It’s a clever way to add some greenery to your holiday spread while keeping things fun and festive.
Why I love this recipe
- The creamy spinach dip inside is a crowd-pleaser inspired by my favorite spinach artichoke dip recipe.
- The puff pastry turns out perfectly crispy, flaky, and buttery every time, which I can never resist.
- I appreciate how versatile this recipe is I can easily switch up the filling to suit my taste or try something new.
Ingredients
- frozen chopped spinach
- cheeses: cream cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese
- seasonings: garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper
- puff pastry
- butter
Step by step
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine the spinach, cream cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out one puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Shape it into a large triangle to form the tree’s base, and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Spread the spinach dip evenly over the puff pastry triangle, leaving a small border around the edge without filling.
- Roll out the second sheet of puff pastry and place it over the spinach dip-covered triangle. Trim the edges to match the shape of the bottom triangle. Press the edges together to seal the spinach filling inside.
- Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut horizontal slits on both sides of the triangle, leaving the center intact to form the tree trunk. These slits will become the branches.
- Twist each strip a few times to create a spiral effect, resembling tree branches. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and garlic powder, then brush this mixture over the pastry.
- Bake in the pre-heated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed. Serve warm!
Tips for best results
- Thoroughly Drain Spinach: Ensure the spinach is well-drained to avoid a soggy pastry.
- Chill Puff Pastry: Keeping the puff pastry dough cold helps it puff up better in the oven.
Variations
If you love cheese, add cheddar, feta or goat cheese to the spinach dip for a tangy flavor. Or add chopped sun-dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers to the spinach mixture for extra flavor and color. For a meaty version, you can mix in some cooked, crumbled bacon or diced ham.
Serving suggestions
This is a wonderful appetizer for holiday get togethers along with other party favorites like sweet and spicy meatballs, candied bacon, smoked salmon dip, bacon wrapped green bean bundles, artichoke dip, and spicy candied pecans.
For party beverages I recommend mulled wine, mulled cider, slow cooker hot chocolate, and champagne punch.
Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
To reheat, place it in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes. This will help maintain the crispy texture we all love. If possible, avoid using the microwave, as it can make the pastry soggy.
