Okay, in my world I’ve transitioned to Fall-we won’t talk about the fact that it’s still in the upper 80s or 90s every day!  So apples, pumpkins, mums and gourds are all I can think about!

I whipped up this easy cinnamon apple bread recipe last weekend to prepare for the momentous occasion of college football starting back up and wanted to share it with you today.  This bread is ah-mazingly delicious (I know I made that word up but believe me, it warrants it’s own made up superlatives!)

I can’t even describe to you how insanely good this apple bread makes your house smell while its baking-and it’s perfection to have a slice when it’s warm out of the oven! If you try it too I’d love it if you popped back and gave it a five-star review in the comments section!

How to Make Apple Bread

  • Mix the cinnamon sugar and chop your apples. Set aside.
  • Stir up batter in a stand mixer (affiliate link) or with a hand mixer.
  • Spray a loaf pan with nonstick spray and pour in half of the batter. Top with half of the apples and cinnamon sugar mixture.
  • Pour in remaining batter and tops with remaining apples and cinnamon sugar.
  • Pat toppings into the top of the bread with the back of a spoon and bake for 50 minutes.
  • Let cool ten minutes before removing from the pan.

Tips for Making the Best Apple Bread

  • Be sure to choose a firm apple variety such as Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Gala or Fuji. Softer types of apples won’t stand up to the baking.
  • Swirl a knife through the batter if desired before baking.

Can I Freeze Apple Bread?

Yes, this bread freezes well. Simply allow the bread to cool completely then wrap in foil and store in a freezer bag. When you are ready to eat the bread, allow to thaw at room temperature before serving.

  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large apple, peeled and finely chopped


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease and flour a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.
  3. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl and set aside.
  4. In a stand mixer (affiliate link), combine white sugar and butter until smooth.
  5. Add eggs and vanilla and continue to beat on medium speed until combined.
  6. Add flour and baking powder, then milk.
  7. Pour half the batter into the prepared pan.
  8. Cover with half of the apples.
  9. Pat apples into batter with the back of a spoon.
  10. Sprinkle with half of sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  11. Pour the remaining batter over apple layer; top with remaining apples and add more brown sugar/cinnamon mixture.
  12. Pat topping into the batter with the back of a large spoon. Use a butter knife held vertically to swirl figure eights through the batter to slightly incorporate the topping.
  13. Bake for 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  14. Cool in pan 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

  1. I made this had my over preheated when I hit the 50 minute mark for I checked it with a toothpick in several places and it was good I let it cool when I flipped it over to get it out of the pan it fell apart and I mean in crumbles it taste dang good but what did I do wrong any ideas

      1. Meant to say: To Sean: The thought occurred to me that maybe you didn’t press the apples into the batter when you put it into the pan?! So instead of baking into the batter, the apples just stayed on top so that’s why your bread fell apart!? Only an observation while making this.

  5. I’m making this recipe for the 5th time this year. I guess I should really say this Christmas season. It’s delicious!

    I messed up the one time and actually put the apples and cinnamon in the batter. It still tasted good but definitely better if you follow the instructions!

    I froze it ahead of time for Christmas hosting. It was perfect!

    This round I’ll probably make two again. One for breakfast at home and probably take one to work.


  6. I made this last week. The taste and consistency are great. Here’s my problem though. The cinnamon and sugar on the top fell off when I lifted the bread out of the pan after cooling! I followed the recipe to the letter and pressed the apples and cinnamon into the batter with a spoon. The apples stayed but the cinnamon and sugar became crusty and fell off. It made a big mess as it fell off in both big and little chunks! Is this normal?

    1. Over the years I’ve found that the topping will stay on better if I take a butter knife and hold it vertically into the batter and swirl in figure-eight motions to slightly incorporate the topping. I’ve updated the recipe card to reflect that, thank you for the comment (sorry for the mess!)

  7. Made it at elevation by adding +1 egg and +1 tsp vanilla and + 1/2 extra apple. Also, I did 1/2 almond flour and 1/2 regular flour. I put parchment paper into the pan and baked for the full 50 minutes and it turned out absolutely delicious! It’s hard to make good bread at elevation so I will be making this again.

  8. I ran across this recipe while searching for quick breads to make for Christmas. But I broke a major rule of baking: never try a new recipe when you are in a hurry. I dumped the brown sugar, white sugar, and butter together and started creaming—then realized the brown sugar was to be mixed with cinnamon and set aside. So I did the only thing I could: I added the cinnamon to the dry ingredients (plus 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg), mixed the batter as directed, then folded in the finely chopped apples. I also tossed in about 3/4 cup chopped walnuts, then baked as directed. After cooling for about 10-15 minutes, I drizzled on a powdered sugar/milk glaze. Result: delicious! I think this would make a good cake with cream cheese frosting. But next time, I will make it correctly. I look forward to that crunchy streusel topping, and the pop of flavor in the hidden layer of cinnamon-sugar apples.

  10. Made this twice and had excellent results both times! I did have to add quite a bit of time for the stick to come out clean. The outside edge was quite crispy by then but that just made my husband love it even more.

  15. First, thank you for this website and all the amazing recipes you have worked so hard to share with us! This recipe is fun and easy to make, but the finished product is too sweet for me. I can’t really taste the apples or cinnamon; I just taste sugar. I think next time I’ll make it with much less sugar and more cinnamon/other strong spices to bring out the flavor of the apples.

    1. I always use granny smith or I also like to use honeycrisp apples in recipes. Sometimes I use both. For extra apple taste, I will chop/dice/slice apple as per instructions but I will also either grate in a small apple or add in some finely minced apples. If grated, you get a little more juice (or it seems) so you want to be careful if a recipe calls for a large amount of liquid.
