Every fall I start breaking out the apple recipes: Apple Cinnamon Bread, Apple Pie Roll Ups, Pumpkin Apple Butter, Apple Crisp, etc. And though I've shared a Skinny Crustless Apple Pie recipe, I had not shared a full apple pie recipe...until today!

This is my Nana's old fashioned Dutch Apple Crumb Pie recipe and it is one of the first baked desserts I ever perfected growing up.

While I can guarantee you that anyone who tastes (or sees) this pie will be impressed with your crazy awesome baking skills you'll be laughing secretly because this is such an easy apple pie recipe! It'll take you less than an hour to prep and bake!

    Ingredients

One of the reasons I love this easy apple crumb pie recipe is that there are no fancy ingredients, most everything you probably already have on hand!

    • frozen prepared pie crust
    • apples
    • sugar
    • cinnamon
    • nutmeg
    • salt
    • brown sugar
    • all-purpose flour
    • butter

What are the best apples for making pie?

According to New England Today, it's best to use a combination of sweet and tart apples when baking a pie.

    • Granny Smith - tart apple considered one of the best for apple pie
    • Esopus Spitzenburg - tart heirloom apple that can be found at farmer's markets, also good for making cider
    • Northern Spy - another tart apple considered to be one of the best for pies, can be difficult to find at grocery stores, look at farmer's markets
    • Idared - tart and spicy apple with bright red coloring
    • Ginger Gold - sweet, crisp apple good for all baking: pies, apple breads, and apple muffins
    • Golden Delicious - mild, sweet apple commonly found in grocery stores, best paired with a stronger tart apple
    • Jazz - sweet apple imported from New Zealand and commonly found in grocery stores
    • Jonagold - sweet apple that has enough tartness to be used on its own in pies
    • Pink Lady - sweet apple that can be commonly found in grocery stores
    • McIntosh - sweet McIntosh apples are easy to find and pair well with Granny Smith apples for pies

    Instructions

The key to making this pie easy is starting with a premade crust.  I have an awesome pie crust recipe but I know many of you out there just don't want or have time to add that step so starting with the crust made for you really simplifies things!

    1. Preheat the oven and prep your baking sheet
    2. Peel, core and very thinly slice your apples and place in a medium bowl.
    3. Add the remaining filling ingredients and mix to coat the apples.
    4. Spoon the filling into the crust.
    5. Mix together the brown sugar, flour, and nutmeg in a medium bowl.
    6. Use a pastry blender (affiliate link) or two knives to cut the butter into the brown sugar mixture until coarse crumbs form.
    7. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.

    Tips for best results

    • For easy cleanup, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the pie on the baking sheet while baking. The topping can sometimes bubble over and this makes for easy cleanup!
    • It is important to peel the apples before slicing, the peel is not welcome in this recipe, it gets chewy when baked!
    • Prep the apple filling before starting the crumb topping. The time the filling sits lets the apples have time to start releasing their juices, which makes for a nice thick filling after baking.
    • If the crust begins to over-brown during cooking, cover the edges with aluminum foil.
    • Allow the pie to cool at least 15 minutes before slicing, the filling thickens as it cools.

    FAQs

How do you know when the pie is done?

Bake the pie until the topping is lightly browned and the filling is bubbly, about 35 minutes.

How many apples do you need to fill a pie?

The answer can vary depending on the type of apple you use, we are aiming for 7 cups of sliced apples, so usually, 7 medium apples or 8-9 small apples will do the trick.

How long does apple pie last?

Store the pie covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days.

    Variations

    • add chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping
    • add half a teaspoon ground cinnamon in the topping

This pie is delicious topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or just by itself.  It's the ultimate comfort food!

I'm confused about the butter measurement. 1.3 chilled butter - TBSP, cup, - how much, please.
