    Homemade Texas Toast

I'm a carb girl. If it's bread or pasta, I'm all in! One of my weaknesses is a thick, buttery piece of homemade Texas Toast...I usually make it any time we have spaghetti or chili for dinner.

I used to buy the frozen store versions of this delicious garlic toast but once I learned just how easy it is to make homemade Texas Toast I never went back! It's a money saver to make it yourself too and it only takes a few minutes! Without further ado, my favorite Homemade Texas Toast recipe.

    What is Texas Toast?

Texas Toast is a thick, buttery garlic toast that is the perfect side for almost any meal!

Why do they call it Texas Toast?

Texas toast may have been first created in 1946 at the Pig Stand in Denton, Texas, after a bakery order for thicker slices of bread resulted in slices too thick for the toaster and a cook, Wiley W. W. Cross, suggested buttering and grilling them as a solution.

    Homemade Texas Toast Ingredients

    • 2 sticks of butter or margarine
    • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon oregano
    • 1 loaf bakery white bread

Best Bread for Texas Toast Garlic Bread

I start with a fresh loaf of white bread from the bakery at my grocery store-it's priced usually about $1.50 so not only is this route tastier, it saves me money on my grocery budget as well. You can also make it with Italian or submarine bread as well, I prefer the bread to be as fresh as possible for the best results.

    How to Make Garlic Toast

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut the bread into 1" slices. In a small bowl, microwave butter for one minute or until fully melted. Add garlic powder, salt, and oregano to the melted butter.

Tips for Making Garlic Texas Toast

    • Use a serrated knife to slice to bread without squishing it.
    • Use fresh bread for the best result.
    • I do not recommend freezing texas toast. Make it fresh for the best results, it only takes a few minutes!
    • Margarine can be substituted for butter without affecting the end result.

My husband and boys can finish off an entire loaf in five minutes flat, it's so yummy!

I used this recipe for my house full of boys that are picky eaters. I used the artesano bread by Saralee and when you flip halfway through I put shredded Colby jack and monteray cheese on it. I should have made a double batch because it was a total hit! Thanks for posting the recipe!

Just made your diy Texas toast with baked ziti. My wife said the toast is better than the store bought. Thanks! She didn’t mention the ziti.
