Why I love this recipe
- Minimal ingredients needed – Just fresh cranberries, sugar, and water create something truly spectacular.
- Perfect make-ahead option – I can prepare these a day or two before my holiday party and focus on other dishes.
- Versatile for so many uses – I’ve garnished everything from cheese boards to cocktails with these beauties.
- Natural festive colors – The ruby red cranberries already scream holiday, and the sparkling sugar makes them even more magical.
- Great activity with kids – Rolling the cranberries in sugar is fun for little hands to help with.
- Budget-friendly – Fresh cranberries are inexpensive, especially during their peak season, and you only need sugar and water
Ingredients

- fresh cranberries – crisp and tart, they’re the main ingredient
- granulated sugar – divided for the syrup and for rolling the berries
- water – dissolves the sugar for the simple syrup
Step by step
- Prepare the Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine ½ cup sugar with ½ cup water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar fully dissolves. Remove from the heat and let the syrup cool for about 5 minutes.
- Coat the Cranberries: Add fresh cranberries to the cooled syrup and stir gently to ensure each berry is evenly coated. Allow them to sit in the syrup for roughly 10 minutes.

- Dry the Cranberries: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cranberries from the syrup, letting any extra syrup drip off. Arrange them in a single layer on a wire rack or parchment-lined surface to prevent sticking. Let them dry for about an hour; they should feel slightly sticky.
- Sugar Coat the Cranberries: Place the remaining ½ cup sugar in a shallow dish. Roll each cranberry gently in the sugar until fully coated, creating a frosted, sparkling effect.
- Dry Again: Transfer the sugared cranberries to a clean baking sheet or plate. Allow them to dry completely for about 30 minutes so the sugar hardens and develops a crunchy texture.
- Serve and Enjoy: Enjoy as a garnish or snack. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Tips for best results
- Use fresh, firm cranberries – avoid any that are soft or wrinkled, as they won’t hold up well during the coating process.
- Don’t skip the drying time – the cranberries need to be sticky but not dripping wet before rolling in sugar, or the coating won’t adhere properly.
- Spread them out – make sure the cranberries aren’t touching during drying to prevent them from sticking together.
- Store them properly – keep them in a single layer in an airtight container to maintain their sparkly appearance.

Serving suggestion
I love how versatile these are! Use them as a gorgeous garnish for cakes, cupcakes, or pies – they’re beautiful on top of white frosting or chocolate desserts, where their ruby-red color really stands out.
They also work wonderfully as a topping for yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, or ice cream when you want something special for breakfast or dessert.
Oh, and drop one into a glass of champagne or a holiday cocktail, or with my sparkling sangria punch – it’s such an easy way to make drinks look extra special.
Storage
Store sugared cranberries in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. Because fresh cranberries contain moisture, the sugar coating will begin to dissolve if they’re stored for too long. Therefore, it is best to make them close to when you plan to serve them.
For the best appearance and texture, plan to make your sugared cranberries the day before or the morning of your event.
Avoid refrigerating them, as the moisture in the refrigerator will cause the sugar to melt.
