There’s something about summer that makes me want to drink a cocktail! All winter long I opt for red wine but as soon as the weather breaks it’s time to open up the bar: Mint Juleps, Planter’s Punch, White Sangria, I love them all!

My current cocktail of choice is a variation on the Paloma cocktail, a popular and easy to make grapefruit and tequila cocktail that originated in Mexico. (La paloma is Spanish for the dove.)

This is my absolute favorite Paloma cocktail recipe because it’s only 3 ingredients, low carb, and incredibly refreshing!

Ingredients

  • tequila – choose a high quality blanco tequila for the best flavor, I like patron silver
  • fresh lime juice
  • grapefruit flavored soda water
  • sliced lime and fresh herbs for garnish (optional)
  • margarita salt for the rim (optional)

Many Paloma recipes call for fresh grapefruit juice but I am currently eating low carb so I prefer to make mine with grapefruit flavored club soda. (La Croix is a favorite but there are many to choose from in the grocery store.)

Step by step

  1. If using salt on the rim first rub the rim with a lime wedge, then dip into the salt.
  2. Fill the glass with ice then add tequila and lime juice, then top with grapefruit soda.
  3. Give it a stir and garnish with a lime wedge and sprig of fresh herbs if desired.

Variations

You can play with this paloma recipe to make it your own. Use a splash of pink grapefruit juice to intensify the taste or sweeten it up with a squirt of simple syrup. You can also substitute the pink grapefruit soda water with fresca for a similar citrus flavor.
