Even in South Georgia, we’ve hit freezing temps this week! I’m all about sunshine, but I do love a bonfire and a steaming mug of hot chocolate when it’s chilly.
This weekend, I made a batch of creamy Nutella hot chocolate for me and my three boys, and it was a hit—just like the peanut butter hot chocolate I shared last winter!
Why I love this recipe
- It’s quick and easily made with 3 ingredients only, perfect for needing something comforting fast.
- The Nutella adds a unique flavor that regular hot chocolate can’t match.

Ingredients
- milk
- milk chocolate morsels
- Nutella hazelnut spread
Step by step
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk, milk chocolate, morsels, and Nutella hazelnut spread, over medium heat.
- Whisk the mixture while heating until everything is well combined and the chocolate melts.
- Once everything’s melted and warm, pour it into your favorite mug.
- Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings if you’re feeling extra!
Which is the best milk?
The type of milk you use makes a big difference in how creamy your Nutella hot chocolate turns out. Whole milk gives you the richest, creamiest texture, while lower-fat options like skim or almond milk create a lighter, thinner drink.

Tips for best results
- Use whole milk for a creamier, thicker texture.
- Don’t let the mixture boil; just warm it up gently and slowly.
- Whisk constantly to ensure the chocolate melts evenly and the drink is smooth.
Variations
If you’re looking to change things up, there are plenty of ways to customize this hot chocolate. Whether you want to make it dairy-free or add a little kick, here are some variations to explore:
- Go Dairy-Free: Swap out regular milk for cashew milk, almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk for a delicious plant-based version.
- Make It Boozy: For a grown-up twist, add a splash of hazelnut liqueur, Bailey’s, Kahlua, rum, Frangelico, chocolate liqueur, or bourbon for a cozy, spiked treat.
- Slow Cooker Method: Do you want to keep it hands-off? Cook it low and slow in a crock pot, just like you would with crock pot hot chocolate.
- Boost the Flavor: Add a half teaspoon of vanilla extract to enhance the rich flavors even more.

Serving suggestions
Serve it with whipped cream and chocolate chips or shavings, as I did, or top with marshmallows (or better yet, add all of the above!). You can also drizzle the top with chocolate syrup.
Or serve alongside eggnog cookies or chewy snickerdoodle cookies for a delightful pairing that is sure to satisfy your cravings.
Storage
You can store Nutella hot chocolate in the fridge for up to two days.
When you’re ready to enjoy it again, just reheat it on the stovetop or in the microwave, giving it a quick stir now and then. It’ll taste just as good as when you first made it!
