This Homestyle Chicken and Noodles recipe is one of my favorite comfort foods. Don’t mistake this for Chicken Noodle soup-there’s no soup here-just thick, hearty goodness!
Why I love this recipe
This recipe is a great way to use up leftover chicken and because it starts with frozen noodles it is very easy to make! You simply allow it to boil for 20 minutes to cook the noodles and combine the flavors, then make a simple roux to thicken it up.
Ingredients
- chicken breasts
- Reames frozen egg noodles
- chicken broth
- carrot
- oregano
- thyme
- bay leaf
- butter
- flour
- milk
Step by step
- Combine chicken, broth, carrot, and spices in a large pot.
- Stir well and bring to a slow boil. Add noodles and simmer for 20 minutes.
- Reduce heat to medium low. In a small bowl combine butter, flour and milk until smooth. Add flour mixture to pot and stir well.
- Continue to heat additional 5 minutes to thicken. Season to taste with salt and ground black pepper and serve immediately.
Tips for best results
- You can substitute poultry seasoning for the oregano and thyme if you like.
- You can make this in the crockpot by cooking for 4-5 hours on low, then thicken it on high.
Variations
- add additional veggies: sliced celery, diced onion, or throw in some frozen mixed vegetables to cook with the frozen noodles
- use shredded skinless chicken thighs instead of boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- experiment with the herbs and seasonings: onion powder and garlic powder can amp up the chicken flavor or try garnishing with fresh parsley
Serving suggestions
This is a meal all on its own but you can serve it with a side of garlic bread, garlic swirl bread, or a simple salad.
Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of chicken broth to keep it from drying out.

This recipe looks absolutely comforting and perfect for a cozy night in! I can’t wait to try it with some homemade biscuits on the side. Thanks for sharing this delightful dish!
hi there! I was wondering, how many ounces of noodles did you add?
It is the 16 ounce bag, I will fix that!
Kroger has Reames frozen noodles in 12, 16, and 24 ounce frozen bags. Your recipe doesn’t seem to specify what size bag to use. Just want to make sure I’m doing it right. THANKS.
It is the 16 ounce bag Keith, I will fix the recipe card to specify!
Added peas and loved it!
I’m so glad you liked it, it is one of my favorites!
I absolutely loved your Homestyle Reames Chicken and Noodles recipe! It brought back so many warm memories of family dinners. The tips you shared made it so easy to follow, and it turned out deliciously creamy and comforting. Can’t wait to make it again! Thank you for sharing!
This turned out pretty easy and quite delicious! I added a few more spices to it at the end for a bit more flavor but plan to make this my go-to for the rest of my week, thanks for the recipe! Do you think replacing the flour/butter/milk mixture with corn starch would work? I’m a novice cook so always a bit hesitant to experiment 🙂
Hi Lincoln, thanks for taking the time to comment and rate the recipe, it’s one of my favorite comfort foods! I do think the roux with butter/flour/milk adds to the taste but cornstarch would thicken it as well. I’ll add it to my (lengthy) list of things to test but if you try it first please stop back by to let me know how it worked!
Finally tried it! It might have been a little slower to thicken, but it eventually did and still tasted great!
Glad you liked it Lincoln, that’s one of my favorite comfort food recipes!
Oh shoot I feel like I should clarify – I re-tried the recipe using corn starch instead of the slurry made with the milk etc. I used about 4.5 tbsp cornstarch, and it worked great. This is now the third time I’ve made this recipe and I love it.
loved it!
This turned out amazing, thank you!

Thanks for the recipe! Chicken noodle soup is the best comfort food! I might add some onion to it for extra flavor.
Reames noodles are not available where I live. Can I use dry or fresh noodles? Looks delicious!
You can substitute the noodles Terilynn, I’d just follow the cooking instructions on the package as far as how long to cook them in the broth.
That looks astoundingly comforting and good. I want it. TONIGHT!
Talk about comfort food – this looks incredible!
