I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made this bread for friends and family, only to have it disappear within minutes. It’s perfect for dipping into soups, serving alongside pasta, or simply enjoying on its own.
Surprisingly, it’s also easy to make, so you don’t have to be a seasoned baker to pull it off, just like our classic garlic bread or cheddar cheese zucchini bread.
As the bread bakes, the garlic, parsley, and butter melt into the dough, creating irresistible swirls of flavor. It’s the kind of bread that not only tastes amazing but also fills your home with the most mouth-watering aroma.
Why I love this recipe
- the combination of garlic and butter is simply irresistible
- even if you’re new to baking, this recipe is straightforward and rewarding, the self-rising flour makes this quick bread easy!
- perfect as a side dish, appetizer, or even a snack
- it looks as good as it tastes, making it a great choice for entertaining
Ingredients
- self-rising flour
- buttermilk
- dry yeast
- garlic cloves
- butter
- salt
- fresh parsley
Step by step
- Preheat the oven at 350°F
- In a medium-sized bowl, mix the dry ingredients together: flour, yeast, and salt, until well combined.
- Then, add the buttermilk and 1 tablespoon of butter. Mix everything using a spatula until a small ball of dough forms. Set it aside in a warm place for about 1 hour.
- When the dough has doubled in size, transfer it to a flat, lightly floured surface, sprinkle it with flour, and roll it into a 16×10-inch rectangle using a rolling pin.
- In a separate bowl, combine the remaining butter, freshly chopped garlic, and parsley.
- Spread the garlic herb butter mixture evenly over the dough using a fork or knife. Roll dough into a log.
- Cut the log of dough in half with a serrated knife and braid it together as shown in the picture. Twist the dough into a figure 8 shape and transfer it into a medium-sized loaf pan or baking dish.
- Bake for 35 minutes in a preheated oven at 350°F until golden brown.
Tips for best results
- Ensure the dough has enough time to rise properly.
- Roll the dough out evenly to get a consistent swirl.
- Use fresh garlic and parsley for the best flavor.
- Don’t overbake; keep an eye on the bread to prevent it from getting too dark.
Variations
- add grated parmesan cheese to the garlic mixture for an extra cheesy twist
- incorporate other herbs like rosemary, oregano, or thyme with the parsley
- mix in a bit of chili flakes or finely chopped jalapeños for a spicy kick
Serving suggestions
Pair it with a hearty soup, such as tomato basil or minestrone, for a cozy meal. It’s also excellent with salads, particularly those dressed with a tangy vinaigrette.
For a more decadent option, serve it alongside pasta dishes like spaghetti, carbonara or lasagna. The garlicky flavor of the bread enhances these dishes beautifully.
Storage
To store this garlic swirl bread, place it in an airtight container or wrap it in foil and keep it at room temperature for up to two days.
If you need to store it longer, wrap the bread tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil before freezing. To reheat, warm bread slices in the oven at a low temperature or use a toaster for a quick option.
