When my schedule gets crazy, I turn to slow cooker smothered chicken. It’s super easy to throw together, and the slow cooker does all the work.

By the time dinner rolls around, I’ve got tender, juicy chicken smothered in creamy gravy. This dish is my favorite way to end a busy day!

Ingredients

  • boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • cream of mushroom soup
  • cream of chicken soup
  • water
  • spices: salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika

Step by step

  1. Trim the chicken breasts and place them in your slow cooker.
  2. Pour the cream of mushroom soup and cream of chicken soup over the chicken.
  3. Sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and paprika. Stir.
  4. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 7.5-8 hours.
  5. Halfway through cooking, give the soups a good stir. If you’re setting and forgetting, stir them together at the beginning.
  6. Once the chicken is cooked through, shred it with two forks, then mix it back into the gravy.
  7. Serve up with rice, egg noodles, or mashed potatoes.

Tips for best results

  • Spray your crock pot with nonstick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.

Variations

If you want to change things up a bit, consider adding some fresh mushrooms or onions or some fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary to the slow cooker for extra flavor.

You can also substitute the chicken breasts with chicken thighs for a richer taste.
