My littlest one got his tonsils out last week and my mom came to stay with us to help out. While she was here we went through old family recipes and came upon this recipe for these easy Sausage CheeseBalls.
This Bisquick Sausage Ball recipe has been a family favorite at every Thanksgiving or family gathering I had growing up! It’s an easy recipe that’s always a hit at parties too!
Why I love this recipe
- only 4 ingredients
- under 30 minutes start to finish
- perfect for parties, holiday breakfasts, or football parties!
Ingredients
You only need 4 ingredients for this easy recipe!
- ground sausage
- cheddar cheese
- Bisquick or other premade baking mix
- milk
Step by step
These are so easy because of the pre-made baking mix!
- Mix the ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Roll into 1 inch balls and placed on a baking dish.
- Bake for 20 minutes and watch them get gobbled up!
And if you want to see a party dish disappear fast, make these! They are seriously always the first plate to be empty!!
Tips & Variations
- I HIGHLY recommend shredding your own cheese for these. Pre-shredded cheese adds cellulose which can cause these to turn out dry.
- If your batter seems too dry, add 1/4 cup of milk.
- Use a cookie scoop to make evenly sized balls
- Line your baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup and reduced sticking
- If the sausage balls seem greasy, transfer to a plate lined with paper towels for a few moments to let excess grease wick away
- If serving at a party, keep the sausage balls in a slow cooker set to “warm” to keep them warm
FAQs
Any kind of raw, ground sausage will work in this recipe. Experiment with flavors to see which you prefer. I usually use a mild Italian sausage, maple sausage, or spicy sausage depending on my mood.
The powdered coating to prevent clumping in pre-shredded cheese can sometimes make the balls go flat when baking. Use freshly shredded cheese for best results.
If at all possible make these the same day as you will be serving. They taste best warm just a few minutes out of the oven. You can serve them at room temperature or warm them in the microwave prior to serving if you make them ahead of time.
You can also make the sausage balls a day in advance and keep uncooked in the refrigerator until ready to bake, this gives a better result than reheating them.
If you have any sausage balls left (I never have leftovers!) store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
Using a pre-made mix makes these very convenient but if you do not have any on hand you can substitute by mixing 3 cups of flour, 3 tsp of baking powder, and ยฝ tsp of salt.
If you would like to freeze these I recommend freezing raw, not after cooking. Mix up the recipe and lay them out on a baking sheet. Freeze for a few hours then transfer to a freezer bag and keep frozen up to 3 months. Bake from frozen by extending the baking time about 5 minutes.
I eat mine as is but you could serve them with ketchup, mustard, honey mustard, gravy, ranch dressing, anything savory really!

Very good, I make these every few weeks for snacking and keep them in the fridge (I like them cold!)
My guests loved these, thanks so much!
This is the same as my grandma’s recipe, always a huge hit at the holidays!
Flavorless and bland. Way too much baking mix. No one liked these at my event. Bummer.
1 lb of hot sausage, 1 1/4 cup of Bisquick, 8oz shredded Sharp cheddar cheese, and 8oz of Cream Cheese (softened), mix all together really well, then roll into balls and bake 15-20 min at 350.. depending on your oven keep an eye on them, and I usually flip them half way… the difference is the cream cheese.. they will not disappoint..
