What is poultry seasoning
Poultry seasoning is a mix of herbs and spices designed to enhance the flavor of chicken and turkey dishes.
It typically includes herbs like sage, thyme, and rosemary, along with spices such as marjoram and sometimes nutmeg. It’s a versatile blend that adds depth and aroma to various poultry recipes, making it a handy shortcut for flavorful cooking.
Why I love this seasoning
- I love homemade seasoning blends because not only are they inexpensive, but I can control the flavor and adjust it to my own taste and they don’t have any extra preservatives.
- I use it not only to season chicken or roast turkey, but I also use it for pork chops, veggies, stuffing, rice, gravies, and seasoning turkey or chicken soups like our chicken noodle soup or chicken pot pie soup.
Ingredients
- dried sage
- dried thyme
- dried marjoram
- dried rosemary
- ground nutmeg
Step by steps
- In a small dish, combine all the ingredients: sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, and nutmeg. Mix them well until fully combined.
- Use immediately or store in a sealed jar or container in the pantry for up to a month.
Tips for best results
- Using your own herbs: If drying your own herbs, grind them to a fine powder with a mortar and pestle, spice grinder, or coffee grinder before adding to the seasoning blend.
- Salt and pepper to taste: I leave out salt and pepper in this mix because you’ll want to adjust them for each dish. Every recipe is different! It will vary from meal to meal on how much salt and pepper you might need.
- Don’t be afraid of the nutmeg: It’s a common ingredient in poultry seasoning for a reason! If you’re unsure, give it a try. You can always leave it out, but it will cut out one of the dynamic flavor components of the seasoning.
- Taste and adjust: This is your seasoning, so make it yours! Play around with the proportions until you find the perfect flavor balance. You can also try adding dried oregano, onion powder, or garlic powder to the mix.
Storage
Store your in a sealed glass jar or airtight container in a cool, dry place, like your pantry. This will keep it fresh for up to a month. If you notice any loss of aroma or flavor potency, it might be time to whip up a fresh batch.
