Growing up in the south, gravy is somewhat of an art form! We love to top just about anything with gravy, whether its turkey gravy, sausage gravy, or this easy Southern white pepper gravy.
Ingredients
Most gravy recipes start with a roux made from equal parts fat and flour. In this Southern white gravy we use butter as the base for the roux. Add in some milk and a little salt and black pepper for seasoning and thats all you need!
You can also use bacon grease as the fat in your gravy if you wish to (that was my grandma’s method!)
Step by step
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium low heat.
- Add in flour and whisk continuously as you cook for 3 minutes or until lightly browned and smooth.
- Add milk to the saucepan 1/2 cup at a time, whisking continuously, until all is added.
- Add pepper and continue to cook until you reach the desired thickness.
- Season to taste with salt and additional black pepper if desired.
Tips for best results
- If the gravy is too thick thin it with additional milk added just a few tablespoons at a time.
- Season to taste after the gravy thickens, always start with just a little bit of salt and add more as needed.
- Add a little extra flavor with cayenne pepper if desired, again starting with a pinch and adding more to taste.
Storage
- Store leftover gravy in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
- You can freeze this white pepper gravy in a freezer safe container up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat over medium low heat on the stovetop.
Serving suggestions
Serve over any kind of meat, especially fried meats like chicken fried chicken, as a dipping sauce for fries or onion rings, over mashed potatoes, or over biscuits.
