This recipe takes everything you love about the traditional Salisbury steak – juicy ground beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy – and streamlines it for the modern cook. No fancy ingredients, no complicated steps, just pure comfort food goodness.
Why I love this recipe
Not only is Salisbury steak the ultimate comfort food, it’s also
Ingredients
- For the patties: egg, condensed French onion soup, Italian bread crumbs, kosher salt, pepper, ground beef
- For the gravy: all-purpose flour, water, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, dry onion soup mix
Step by step
- In a large bowl, combine the egg, 1/3 cup of soup, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and beef. Mix until well incorporated. Then, shape the mixture into six patties.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the patties for 3-4 minutes on each side. Set the patties aside and pour off any excess grease from the skillet.
- Add the remaining soup, dry onion soup mix, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet.
- Mix the flour with water and pour it into the skillet, stirring until the gravy thickens.
- Return the patties to the skillet and spoon the gravy over the top.
- Cover and cook on low for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Tips for best results
- Use good-quality beef for the best flavor.
- Don’t overmix the beef mixture; this helps keep the patties tender.
- Make sure the skillet is hot before adding the patties to get a nice sear.
- Stir the gravy occasionally while simmering to prevent it from sticking.
Variations
For a lighter twist, substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken. You can also add sliced and sautéed mushrooms to the gravy if you like.
Serving suggestions
Simple salisbury steak pairs well with a variety of sides. Some of my favorites are mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or buttered egg noodles. Roasted russet potatoes are a great (and frugal!) option as well.
Storage
Leftover Salisbury steak can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave of in a covered skillet.
