What is Chicken Fried Steak?

Chicken fried steak, also known as country fried steak, is a classic comfort food that’s straight from the South.

It typically consists of a tenderized cube steak, or round steak pounded with a meat tenderizer, coated in a seasoned flour mixture. Then the breaded steak is fried until golden brown and crispy.

The dish gets its name from the cooking method, which is similar to making fried chicken in hot oil. Despite its name, chicken fried steak is made with beef, not chicken.

Chicken-fried steak is a southern favorite for sure and us usually served with creamy white gravy or brown gravy topped with a generous amount of black pepper, and traditional Southern sides.

The rich, savory flavors of the steak pair perfectly with these hearty sides. So, the next time you’re in the mood for a comforting and indulgent meal, give the chicken fried steak a try and discover why it has become a beloved staple in Southern cuisine.

  1. You are clearly not from the South. Chick Fried Steak & Country Fried Steak are NOT the same. Country FS is made with cubed steak. Chicken FS is Country FS substituted with chicken. (Think Philly cheese steak vs. Chicken Philly). Country Fried Steak is not ever chicken (Unless you don’t know any better).

    1. I am from the South. I was born in Charleston, SC, spent many years in southeastern Virginia, and currently living near Savannah, GA. In my world, country fried steak and chicken fried steak are the same thing. If you are using chicken you would call it chicken fried chicken or country fried chicken. I never said country fried steak was chicken, I specifically said “Despite its name, chicken fried steak is made with beef, not chicken.”
