Description

Smooth and creamy country white gravy is a Southern staple. This easy gravy recipe whips up in just 15 minutes and is perfect for topping mashed potatoes, chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken, drop biscuits, green beans, or just about anything!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt butter over medium high heat in a small saucepan.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook 3 minutes, whisking constantly.
  3. Slowly add milk while whisking, 1/2 cup at a time.
  4. Continue to whisk until thickened, season to taste with salt and pepper.

Notes

  • If the gravy is too thick thin it with additional milk added just a few tablespoons at a time.
  • Season to taste after the gravy thickens, always start with just a little bit of salt and/or cayenne and add more as needed.
