Description
Soft dinner rolls are easier than you think to make from scratch! These simple bread rolls take only 7 basic ingredients and a little bit of patience and are perfect for everything from holiday meals to busy weeknights.
Ingredients
- 4 -5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons instant yeast
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm milk , 100-110 degrees F
- 5 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 egg , room temperature
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer (affiliate link) combine 3 cups of flour, instant yeast, granulated sugar, salt, warm milk, softened butter, and egg.Â
- Using a dough hook, mix on low speed until blended, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Increase speed to medium and continue to mix for an additional 2 minutes.
- Add 1/2 cup of flour and mix until blended. Repeat with an additional 1/2 cup of flour.
- Dough should be slightly sticky and pulling away from the edge of the bowl. If dough sticks to your hand or the bowl add additional flour 1/4 at a time until you get the proper consistency.
- Spray a large bowl with cooking spray and transfer the dough to it. Cover with a towel, damp paper towel, or plastic wrap and allow to rise for 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Remove the covering and punch the dough to deflate.
- Divide the dough into 24 equal pieces (about 2 ounces each). Roll each piece into a smooth dough ball.
- Spray a baking sheet or 9 by 13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Place the dough balls into the dish, cover, and allow to rise for an additional 30 minutes at room temperature.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake rolls for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. If rolls are getting too dark, tent with foil.
- Remove rolls from oven and brush immediately with melted butter.Â
Notes
Make sure your yeast isn’t expired and be sure you are using INSTANT active dry yeast
The temperature of the milk is crucial for activating the yeast, so make sure it’s between 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit
Be sure the dough is in a draft-free location and covered with a towel, damp paper towel, or plastic wrap during the two rising sessions
When shaping the dough balls, ensure they are perfectly smooth on top for the best appearance.
Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Freeze rolls in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature then reheat in the microwave or oven.
