Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground breakfast sausage
  • (1) 8-count refrigerated biscuits
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • pinch of red pepper flakes
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ยฐF and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. In a large skillet, cook and crumble the sausage until browned. Drain any excess grease and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1โ€“2 minutes.
  4. Add the salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes, then slowly whisk in the milk until smooth.
  5. Continue cooking until the gravy thickens, stirring often.
  6. Cut each biscuit into quarters and arrange them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Stir about ยผ of the sausage into the gravy.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining sausage evenly over the biscuits, followed by the shredded cheese.
  9. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream until combined, then pour over the casserole.
  10. Pour the gravy evenly over everything.
  11. Bake for 35โ€“40 minutes, or until the center is set and the biscuits are fully cooked through.

Notes

Check doneness by inserting a fork in the center; the biscuit pieces should be soft but not doughy.
