Way back in 2011 when this blog was brand new and just my little outlet while my husband was deployed I posted about making bird feeders with my boys. We recently did this again last week and I thought it was worth posting properly so that others could do this fun craft too!
What You Need:
Birdseed (obviously!)
2 Packets of Unflavored Gelatin
Cookie Cutters
Wax Paper
Twine
What You Do:
Bring ½ cup of water to a boil.
Remove from heat and stir in gelatin until dissolved.
Add 1.5 cups of birdseed.
Lay wax paper on a flat surface and position your cookie cutters on top.
Spoon birdseed mixture into the cookie cutters until halfway full, then lay a knotted piece of twine in the mixture and continue to fill.
Pat top until smooth and let sit until hardened-about 6 hours.
Too easy, right? With Spring finally beginning to arrive it’s the perfect afternoon craft!
Really nice. A lot more than thanks for sharing it .
This beautiful craft project was added to our family’s Friday Finds link-up !
We can’t wait to try it out!
Great idea, we made some a while ago and filled empty yogurt pots with homemade bird cakes.
We have many birds frequent our yard and all the big birds get the seed, so this is a greaat idea for the little ones, I got my gelatin and will be making these soon. Thanks for sharing!! @ Wordless Wednesday In a Zen Way
I can’t wait to make these with my little one. He loves to watch the birdies outside our living room window.
That’s exactly where we put ours-the kids love it!
I got this site from my buddy who told me regarding this web site and now this time I am visiting this
website and reading very informative articles at this time.
Great idea! We’ll be moving in to a house soon, so this will be a nice way to welcome spring.
I’m thinking of doing this with my students for our spring party. How many will your reciepe make?
Hi Shelley, I used average sized cookie cutters and made 5 with this recipe. Be aware they have to harden in the cutter so each student would need their own cookie cutter. I’d love to see a picture if you give it a try! ~Melissa
What a great idea. We’re always looking for fun ideas for feeding the birds. (Fun for kids, that is. I doubt that the birds care as long as they get their feast. 🙂 Thanks for posting this!
We will be doing this ASAP! Thanks!
What a lovely idea! This would be something I would do with my hubby! He is a big fan of feeding the birds. Popping over from Tatertots and Jello link party!
Happy weekend!
The birds are loving them in our backyard now, I hope you get as great of a result-we hung some of ours right outside our living room window and it’s been so nice to see the birds popping in for a snack!
That is a fantastic idea! And it looks like a great project to do with kids!
i’m totally going to do this with my girls! they love watching the birds but i haven’t made the effort to coerce the birds our way!
So glad I found this. Each spring a bear pulls down & destroys our bird feeder. Then we aren’t allowed to put it back up for 6 weeks to avoid creating a nusiance bear. I can hang these arounnd the yard & maybe the bear won’t be attracted to them as easily. Thanks for the great idea.
Oh my, a bear!!! Whoa!
