Why You Need to Change Ceiling Fan Direction

Depending on which way your ceiling fan blades are turning, the air is either being pushed up from the room to create a breeze, or down from the ceiling due to the angel of the blades. Changing the direction of the rotation of the ceiling fan blades can let you take advantage of this to save money!

Which Fan Direction in Summer

In the summertime and warmer months, the blades should rotate counter-clockwise. This pushes air up out of the room to the ceiling and creates a refreshing breeze that allows you to keep your thermostat set higher and save money!

Which Fan Direction in Winter

In the wintertime or cooler months, you should reverse the direction of the fan to clockwise. This clockwise rotation pushes the warmer air that rises to the ceiling down, helping keep you warm and reducing the amount of heat you need.

How to Change the Ceiling Fan Blade Direction

It’s super simple to change the direction your fan is turning. There is a small switch on the fan. In the winter the switch should be up, which creates the clockwise rotation, in the summer flip the switch down to create counter-clockwise rotation.

(An easy way to remember which way to flip the switch is to think of how you set your thermostat in those months, up for warmth in the winter, and down for cooling in the summer!)

If your fan has a left-right switch, simply turn it on and see whether it’s rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise and adjust accordingly. It is usually left for summer and right for winter.
