Over the Memorial Day weekend we had family in town visiting so I took that as an excuse to invite friends over for what was intended to be a nice outdoor party.

As the day approached I could see that a subtropical storm was going to ruin those plans so I moved the party indoors rather than cancel. The menu went from s’mores to finger food and my stepmom and I whipped up these delicious and oh-so-cute blueberry Caprese skewers on a whim and they were a big hit!

We found mozzarella cheese “pearls” in the cheese case by the deli at our local grocery store and thought they were too cute to pass up. Our original plan had been to buy larger mozzarella balls but when we saw the pearls we decided to scrap our original Caprese salad idea and pair it with blueberries instead. Drizzled with balsamic vinegar and paired with fresh basil from the garden, they were a huge hit at the shindig!

Why I love this recipe

  • they are the perfect finger-food sized appetizer
  • the sweet blueberry is accented by the balsamic drizzle

FAQs

Can I add tomatoes?

If you want to add quartered cherry tomatoes to the skewers to more closely resemble traditional Caprese salad, feel free. The blueberries and tomatoes compliment each other. (This is also a great way to make this a red, white, and blue appetizer for 4th of July!)

I prefer a balsamic reduction instead of balsamic vinegar, how do I make it?

If you prefer a thicker and stronger balsamic taste, simmer a cup of balsamic vinegar on the stovetop for ten minutes or until it is the consistency of maple syrup. You can also buy pre-made balsamic reduction in most grocery stores.

I can’t find mozzarella pearls, what else can I use?

You can cube mozzarella into a similar size and use the cubes in place of the pearls. I recommend real fresh mozzarella from the cheese case over blocks of mozzarella. Some deli cases will also carry marinated mozzarella to change up the flavor.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Make the skewers up to 4-6 hours in advance and wrap tightly. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar just before serving.
