When I was a little girl my mom would take me to a “fancy” Italian restaurant any time we were celebrating something. She knew the owners and they would always make a big fuss bringing me my very favorite meal: Fettuccine Alfredo. Now that I’m older I realize that making my own Alfredo Sauce is so easy there’s no need to save it for special occasions!

This Homemade Alfredo Sauce takes just 10 minutes to whip up and once you try it, you’ll never go back to bottled sauce! (Although if you do be sure to read my tips for making jarred alfredo sauce taste better!)

What is Alfredo Sauce?

Traditional Italian Alfredo sauce is a simple cream sauce made with heavy cream, butter, and Parmesan cheese. It can be seasoned with salt and pepper, garlic, and herbs to add to the flavor.

Ingredients

butter, parmesan cheese wedge, cream in measuring cup, minced garlic Italian seasoning

See the web story step by step here.

Step by step

If you haven’t made alfredo sauce from scratch before, you’re in for a treat because it is SO simple!

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet and add heavy cream. Bring to a simmer (don’t boil!)
  2. Add garlic and seasonings as you whisk the sauce for a moment.
  3. Add Parmesan cheese and stir until it is melted and the sauce is smooth then remove from heat. Boom! You’re done! Then simply toss the homemade alfredo sauce with pasta and enjoy the compliments!

Tips for best results

  • As with many simple recipes with few ingredients, the quality of your ingredients matters. I recommend freshly grated Parmesan cheese for the best taste.
  • The sauce will thicken as it cools.
  • While you can make this alfredo sauce with milk in a pinch, it may result in a thinner sauce that isn’t quite as rich. I recommend going with the heavy cream for the best results. You can make this alfredo sauce with half and half also.
  • See these tips for reheating alfredo sauce if you have leftovers.
